Continuing the Journey

We are happy you have joined us for part three of the Connections series.

This course, Connections III: Holistic Assessment in Early Learning, builds on the material introduced in Connections II and is the final course in the Connections suite of courses.

In this course we will focus our attention on the inclusion of family as central to strength-based assessment practice. We will also look at holistic and focused assessment practices, and the importance of a collaborative approach to assessment in early learning.

As in the previous course, the learning for Connections III is structured in modules that cover distinct topics. We invite you to work at your own pace, and encourage you to complete one module a week if possible, We know your lives are busy, and that some people may need a bit longer to complete a module.

Scenario-based learning allows learners to view situations from different perspectives, encouraging thoughtful reflection. Applying learning in a more practical way can help to build confidence and gives the learner the ability to transfer knowledge to real-life work. You will see how best practices might look in action, determine alternate strategies you could implement in these situations, and reflect on your own experiences as a care provider.

Your task is to take on the perspective of the provider within the scenario and determine:

  • What worked well?
  • What, if anything, could be done differently?

Remember, it is not the job of providers to diagnose children. Instead, we can do our best to create safe childcare ecosystems that promote social emotional well-being and support children and their diverse range of behaviours. This will be important to keep in mind while navigating the scenarios in Module 4.
