A: Three Statements
Choose one of the following words: MONEY, TRAVEL, FOOD, EXERCISE.
Now, using the text box below, complete the following statements about the word you chose. Write down with the first thing that comes to mind for each!
- I think ___________
- I feel ___________
- I will ___________
When you have done that, please open Section B below.
B: Now consider….
Using the same word you chose in Section A, complete the following sentences using the text box below:
- Something I know to be true about [money, travel, food, exercise] is…
- Something that is important to me about [money, travel, food, exercise] is…
- A rule I try to follow about [money, travel, food, exercise] is…
Are there any similarities between the sentences you wrote in Section A and those you wrote here?
Make a note of your thoughts below, then continue the video when ready.
C: Beliefs…
Here is an example belief system about getting up early. Can you identify which of the statements is a belief, a value and an ethic?
“I set my alarm for 5 AM every day and never let myself sleep in. People who wake up early are more successful and get more done in their day. Being successful and productive is the key to a happy life!”
Rewrite the statements below, listing the belief first, then the value, and finally the ethic.
When you have done that, please open Section D below.
D: …Values and Ethics
So a belief is what we think is true:
“People who wake up early are more successful and get more done in their day.”
Beliefs are closely linked to values. This is what we feel is important:
“Being successful and productive is the key to a happy life.”
This can then imply an ethic or rule. In other words a way to act:
“I set my alarm for 5 AM every day and never let myself sleep in.”
Our belief systems not only shape our own behaviour, they impact how we interact with others. How might someone who held the belief system described above think, feel and act toward someone who slept in every day? Note down your thoughts in the text box below.
When you are ready, continue the video.
E: Trigger Warning
Please be forewarned that this portion of the course video deals with topics some people may find upsetting, including sexual coercion and violence. If you would rather read the transcript, please download it here.
F: Once Upon A Time
Please
rank each character on a scale of 1 to 5 where:
1 is the character whose behaviour you MOST AGREE with and 5 is the character you LEAST AGREE with.
Alex (Main character)
Leslie (Alex’s lover)
Pat (The boat owner)
Morgan (Old friend)
Chris (Another old friend)
Note down briefly why you have given each character that score.
When you have finished, enter your responses into this survey and see how others have ranked the characters’ behaviour.
When you have completed the survey, open Section F.
G: Your Belief System in Action
What thoughts and feelings did you have about the story and the characters?
What actions might you have taken if you were Alex? What about if you were Leslie?
What beliefs, values, and/or ethics do you think influenced your decision-making on how to rank the characters?
Note your thoughts below. When you have finished, open Section G.
H: Others’ Reactions
Watch the video to see a discussion between Best Choices Guide, Charlene Gray, and some ECE students from Capilano University. (Thank you to Manuela Salinas, Trina Pacana, and Ingrid Sell Koerich for sharing their thoughts!)
Then, scroll down to see how four other participants responded to the story.
As you watch and read, consider how your own rankings and explanations fit or do not fit with those expressed by others.
When you are ready, open Section H.
Response A
1 Leslie
Probably a reasonable or understandable initial response, but maybe should just have been given a little more time to come around…or maybe understood that Alex was not that serious in the first place, which seems to be proved true by how easily Alex goes off with Chris.
2 Alex
Was only trying to connect with Leslie (but gave up really easily so maybe not as forgivable and was not deep down so serious).
3 Morgan
Lack of moral courage – their failure to condemn Pat was almost meaning it was an acceptable demand.
4 Pat
Their demand totally crossed the line.
5 Chris
Resorted to pre-meditated violence, morally and criminally wrong!
Response B
1 Morgan
I thought Morgan didn’t do anything wrong and was just trying to be the peacemaker.
2 Chris
Well it wasn’t great that Chris beat up Leslie but I do think that Leslie wasn’t that great.
3 Alex
I thought that Alex shouldn’t have slept with Pat but was really stuck in a bad situation.
4 Leslie
I thought that Leslie should have been more mad at Pat rather than Alex.
5 Pat
I thought that Pat was the worst one because it’s a horrible thing to force sex on someone when they are in such a difficult position.
Response C
1 Alex
Because Alex only wanted to see Leslie and wasn’t trying to hurt anyone.
2 Morgan
Morgan should have been a better friend and tried to help Alex more.
3 Leslie
Leslie wasn’t very understanding of Alex, who was only trying to do what was needed to get to see Leslie, but instead got angry and jealous without looking at intent.
4 Chris
Because Chris was happy to beat someone up for no good reason.
5 Pat
Pat was basically holding Alex ransom even though they were friends.
Response D
1 Alex
Alex made as a sacrifice and was honest about it.
2 Morgan
Not getting involved is not a good answer but Morgan was honest about not getting involved.
3 Pat
It was a very mercenary thing to do with someone in distress.
4 Chris
Violence should never be an answer and it sounded like Chris enjoyed wrecking violence on Leslie from a place of long held bitterness and possibly envy.
5 Leslie
Leslie is a thoughtless cad! – no understanding or appreciation for what Alex sacrificed for their lover.
I: Reflecting on Differing Perspectives
In the text box below, note your responses to the following questions:
- Did hearing and/or reading other perspectives change how you thought about the story or characters?
- Were there any differences of opinion between your reaction to the story and others’?
- If yes, how did those differences make you feel?
- How might different reactions to the story reflect differences in belief systems?
When you are ready, continue the video.
